A total of 82 volunteers from Christchurch will visit the Cook Islands over the next three months as part of the Heroes and Heroine initiative instigated by the Cook Islands government and coordinated by Tourism Cook Islands.
Last year the Cook Islands government offered the mayor of Christchurch, Bob Parker, 50 heroes and heroines who were instrumental in the recovery and rebuilding of Christchurch after the devastating February earthquakes caused widespread damage and death in New Zealand’s second largest city.
The heroes have now begun arriving in the Cook Islands almost a year after an earthquake devastated Christchurch in February 2011.
The Edgewater Resort & Spa was of course part of this wonderful gesture and has already hosted 4 Heroes & Heroines at our Resort, with more to come.
During February, the first of the heroes touched down in Rarotonga. The remaining people will continue to arrive over the coming two months, with travel costs, accommodation and activities donated by the public and private sector alike.
One of those heroes, Dougal Coleman, said he had a fantastic time in the Cooks and thoroughly enjoyed his stay here with us at The Edgewater Resort & Spa. Dougal was also able to jet off to Aitutaki for two days as part of the initiative. What a terrific way to say thanks!
We look forward to hosting more Heroes and Heroines later in March.
